Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) is a naturally derived simple carbohydrate most commonly obtained from sugar beet or sugar cane fermentation. It is the primary active ingredient in self-tanning formulations. DHA reacts with amino acids in the skin’s surface keratin to produce melanoidins, which are brown-colored polymers that create the appearance of a natural tan. Recognised as the gold-standard sunless tanning agent, DHA is widely used in lotions, sprays, mousses, and creams.

How To Use

Recommended usage level*:
Light Tanners: 2–3%
Medium Tanners: 5–8%
Dark Tanners: 8–12%
Gradual Tanners: 1–3%
Professional Spray Tans: 8–15% (depending on depth desired)
*Confirm regulatory compliance in target market
Formulation tips: Add to the water phase. DHA performs best at a finished product pH of 4.0-5.0. For emulsions, add DHA after cool-down phase (<40°C) as DHA is heat sensitive.
Storage: Keep refridgerated at 4-8°C.
